For many kids growing up in the 1990s and longtime fans alike, Batman: The Animated Series represented the peak of the franchise's small-screen iterations. Build on the legacy of the original comics and boosted by the proven aesthetic of Tim Burton's films, carrying the gothic look well in an animated Gotham City. Even subsequent projects like The New Batman Adventures, various Justice League projects and crossovers with Superman, and the acclaimed Batman Beyond were reasonably considered great, with even Batman: Caped Crusader somewhat recapturing the magic. But one shocking replacement came in 1999 from the most unexpected of places.
