Leroy Jethro Gibbs' return in NCIS season 23 was secretly set up five years ago. Mark Harmon's beloved character has been out of the game for a while now following his retirement in Alaska. Ever since he chose to stay in Naktok Bay, he hadn't been back in the District, although he had been regularly referenced by his old team back in Navy Yard. That all changed, however, in the 2025-2026 TV cycle, when NCIS season 23 found a way to sneakily incorporate him into the story.
