While Apple TV’s great new sci-fi series is just the latest in a string of critically acclaimed hits in the genre for the streaming service, the fact that the show is a spinoff calls into question one famous adage of TV production. For time immemorial, TV spinoffs have always been a mixed bag whose legacy leaned heavily into the disreputable. For every spinoff that lived up to the original, like the Cheers spinoff Frasier, there were a dozen terrible shows, like Joey, AfterMASH, The Golden Palace, or That ‘80s Show.
