After the first two Avatar movies became cultural landslides and record-breaking blockbusters, the third chapter — Avatar: Fire and Ash — underperformed at the box office (which means it only made $1 billion, not $2 billion). It did really well, but it didn’t do the mega-super-huge numbers that Avatar movies need to be considered a smashing success. So, for once, the future of the Avatar franchise is in doubt. Will James Cameron have to figure out a way to make Avatar 4 for a smaller budget? Will he make Avatar 4 at all? Does Disney even want him to?
