Dark fantasy has the potential to be one of the most exciting fantasy subgenres, as it turns most of the traditional features of the genre upside down. Despite fairytales originally being dark and disturbing cautionary tales, the modern fantasy genre has become associated with a more lighthearted tone, a younger audience, and "happily ever after" endings. While the best fantasy TV shows of all time can have scary and tragic moments, dark fantasy takes this to another level.
