Ridley Scott’s seminal 1982 masterpiece Blade Runner is one of the greatest and most influential science fiction films ever made. Scott brought the cyberpunk genre to life with overbearing sets, dazzling special effects, and a chilling dystopian atmosphere, and it’s come to be recognized as a classic. But in its time, it wasn’t appreciated. E.T. was dominating the box office at the time, so two equally great but much bleaker sci-fi gems — Blade Runner and The Thing — came and went without making a splash.
