It’s been seven years since J.J. Abrams directed a movie, with 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, and it’s been 15 years since he directed a non-Star Wars or Star Trek movie. But this year, he’s back with his first original film since 2011’s Super 8. On November 13, Abrams will release a science fantasy epic called The Great Beyond, starring Jenna Ortega and Glen Powell. While it’ll be interesting to see those two rising stars share the screen, it is a bit disappointing that Abrams has gone with such obvious, established stars to lead his second ever original movie.
