A Magnificent Life Review: Creative But Shallow Animated Movie Is A Loving Tribute To A French Legend

It's easy to see why the animator Sylvain Chomet is drawn to multi-hyphenate legend Marcel Pagnol. The two French writers come from a school that makes the provincial cinematic, albeit in different ways. Chomet's The Triplets of Belleville, one of the most whimsical of animated films of the 21st century, combines elements of old Hollywood with the Tour de France; The Illusionist brought magic to the Scottish countryside. Pagnol's work – from his Marseille Trilogy to The Baker's Wife – takes an almost opposite approach: bringing the everyday to the realm of the ethereal.
