Jedi Master Yoda taught Luke Skywalker about the dark side of the Force in The Empire Strikes Back, but an ancient conflict between the Jedi and the Sith proved that one of his lessons was wrong. While the first Star Wars movie mentioned the dark side and portrayed it as evil through Darth Vader, the film never explained what separated it from the "good side", as Luke called it. According to Yoda, the dark side is about anger, fear, and aggression, while a Jedi chooses to use the Force for knowledge and defense, never being the one to attack first.
