Previously in the romantasy series, it was revealed that Captain Charles Cunningham was raising a loyalist militia on Fraser's Ridge, despite his claim that he was retired and had no further interest in war. Though he knows Jamie is a patriot, Cunningham invited him to join. Jamie makes it appear as if he will consider the request, but it's just to buy some time.
