Nosferatu brought the original cinema vampire Count Orlok back to the big screen, and it included some interesting new abilities where the vampire uses shadow powers to both touch and torment his victims. The original Nosferatu was made in 1922 as a German expressionist film by F.W. Murnau, the same filmmaker who directed the expressionist masterpiece The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. This was loosely based on Bram Stoker's Dracula, with the title and certain things changed to avoid copyright claims from the Stoker Estate, who did not allow adaptations of his popular work at the time.
