Emperor Palpatine boasts about his ability to foresee the future in Star Wars, but that didn't seem to help him when he was defeated thoroughly more than once. In Return of the Jedi, Palpatine remarks, Everything is proceeding exactly as I have foreseen, referring to Vaders desire to find Luke Skywalker and turn him to the dark side. Luke does come to Vader as Palpatine predicts, but never gives in to the dark side, pulling Vader back to the light instead and giving his father the perfect chance to turn on his master. Palpatine clearly didnt expect any of that.
